The Ideas to Images Story

Part One: The Early Years

Image of an IdeaIn the beginning there was the word. But the word needed some pictures, so in 1977 Gary Palmatier created Ideas to Images to provide design and illustration services to Los Angeles and the world.

The company's first ten years saw a gradual shift away from commercial art clients -- a national CPA firm, a French hotel chain, and several L.A. ad agencies -- toward textbook publishing clients.

Not only were the projects bigger and the schedules reckoned in weeks, as opposed to hours, but there was also a different sense of purpose. The aim of advertising, after all, is to stimulate materialistic lust; the goals of educational publishing are to instruct and edify.*

Ideas to Images became an independent consultant to i/e, inc., a book development company. Gary designed and supervised, through final proofs, several series of high school and college level textbooks. He built and led their in-house production department, a team of six artists whose work he coordinated and scheduled to meet i/e's very demanding deadlines.
